M1 northbound to be closed throughout morning after serious 5-car crash

A section of the M1 in the East Midlands is expected to be closed throughout Thursday morning, March 11, after a serious multi vehicle pile-up.

The emergency services were called to an incident involving five cars between junction 20 and junction 21, in Leicestershire, at about 6.30pm yesterday.

It happened on the northbound carriageway of the road and left one person with life-threatening injuries.

Highways England confirmed the southbound carriageway has re-opened, however, a spokesperson added: "M1 northbound from J20 to J21 is still closed for vehicle recovery and carriageway resurfacing. We are expecting it to be closed throughout tomorrow morning."

Following the incident on Wednesday evening, a Leicestershire Police spokesperson said: "We were called just before 6.30pm to a report of a collision on the northbound carriageway of the M1 between junction 20 for Lutterworth and junction 21 for Leicester.

"It is believed to have involved five vehicles.

"One person has been taken to the University Hospital of Coventry, at Walsgrave, with injuries that are life-threatening.

"A number of other people were also taken to hospital as a precaution."

"The M1 is closed in both directions and will probably remain that way for a number of hours."
