M1 forced to close after truck spills load of carrots across whole carriageway

The M1 was forced to fully close earlier after a truck carrying carrots spilled its load across the whole road.

There were orange vegetables in every lane of the motorway following the incident at around 5.50pm.

It occurred between junctions 40 and 39 on the southbound carriageway, close to Wakefield.

All lanes of traffic were forced to stop while the clean-up operation began, and were not released until 6.20pm.

Some congestion had built up in the area, but traffic conditions quickly resumed to normal following the incident.

A statement from Highways England read: "M1 south between J40 Flushdyke and J39 Durkar.

Traffic Officers currently have all lanes stopped under a temporary block to remove carrots that have been deposited in all four lanes!!"
