M1 crash sparks PSNI warning after collision involving broken down car

Police have urged motorists to 'expect the unexpected' following a collision on M1 this morning.

Officers were called to the scene near Junction 6 at the turnoff for Saintfield heading countrybound on Sunday, February 16.

The collision involved a car travelling on the motorway and a broken down vehicle on the hard shoulder.

Police say those involved sustained minor injuries.

Following the crash police warned motorists to take extra care on the roads.

A spokesperson for PSNI Road Policing posted: "Our advice is simple - slow down, wear a seatbelt, and expect the unexpected on the road ahead.

"Times like this show why that’s important. A collision between a vehicle travelling on the motorway and a broken down vehicle in lane two.

"In this case there were thankfully only minor injuries - the driver of the broken down vehicle had the wit to get their family out of the vehicle and on to the hard shoulder, the collision occurred a very short time later."

The road was closed between the Applegreen service station and Blacks Road but has since reopened.
