M1 crash: Man, 70, dies and woman in critical condition after lorry and car crash

A man has died and a woman is in a critical condition following a crash involving a car and a lorry which closed the M1 for more than nine hours.

At around 4am on Friday morning (October 4) a Volvo XC90 and a HGV lorry were travelling on the M1 northbound, near to Junction 28 when they crashed.

Emergency services attended and a 70-year-old man, the driver of the Volvo, died at the scene.

A woman who was the passenger was taken to hospital where she remains in a critical condition, Derbyshire police confirmed.

The road was closed for a number of hours whilst emergency services and Highways England worked to carry out their investigation and clear the scene.

The road re-opened at 1.20pm on Friday afternoon.

A police spokesman said the crash happened in lane one of the M1, which is a section of Smart motorway.

But they added that this factor had nothing to do with the crash happening.

No arrests have been made.
