M1 crash leaves woman in critical condition after collision closed motorway for nine hours

A woman has been left in a critical condition in hospital following a crash involving several vehicles on the M1.

The accident happened yesterday at around 6.30am when a Vauxhall Corsa, driven by the 43-year-old woman, collided with a maroon DAF HGV on the southbound carriageway near Sheffield.

The Corsa then smashed into the central barrier before being involved in a further collision with a yellow Volvo HGV and a silver Renault Trafic van.

Emergency services quickly closed all lanes of the motorway and the woman was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Her condition has not changed since then.

South Yorkshire Police conducted crash investigations throughout yesterday, meaning the southbound M1 between junctions 31 and 32 was closed for around nine hours.

Officers from South Yorkshire Police and Highways England did their best to turn most of the trapped vehicles around but it was not until around 2pm that some drivers managed to exit the M1.

Anyone who saw what happened, or who has dashcam footage which could assist the inquiry, is asked to please call 101 quoting incident number 115 of 5 February 2020. You can submit dashcam footage via email to  enquiries@southyorks.pnn.police.uk.
