M1 crane fire diversion as motorists face hours of delays after incident between junctions 30 and 31

Motorists are facing hours of delays on the M1 near Nottinghamshire due to a crane fire. The motorway is closed in both directions with plumes of black smoke being seen for miles around the incident, which was first reported at around 1.30pm on Friday (March 10).

National Highways has confirmed both the northbound and southbound carriageways are both blocked between junction 31 for Worksop and junction 30 for Barlborough. Firefighters from South Yorkshire and Derbyshire are on the scene, dealing with incident.

Reports suggest some motorists have not moved for at least an hour with traffic trapped between the two junctions. Google traffic data currently shows delays of around an hour along the M1 as emergency crews try and tackle the incident. The motorway is expected to be closed for several hours.
