Colindale fire: Workshops destroyed in blaze that brought M1 to a standstill

A huge blaze at a car workshop closed the M1 and disrupted train services, bringing parts of north London to a standstill on Thursday night.

Sixty firefighters tackled the flames for nearly four hours as they ripped through the building in West Hendon Broadway, Colindale at 6.45pm.

Neighbours were evacuated from their homes as the single unit workshops were completely destroyed by the inferno.

Footage shows huge towers of black smoke being sent into the air behind the high street’s shops. The blaze, visible for miles, prompted 44 calls to London Fire Brigade.

The M1 motorway was temporally closed between junctions 1 and 4 and rail services were also affected. Both are now back in service.

Major congestion was also reported on the A5 and North Circular Road. Some residents were evacuated from their homes.

LFB said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

It came hours after a woman was found dead in a house fire on Connaught Road in Barnet.

The whole of the ground floor and first floor of the two storey house were destroyed by fire. Firefighters breaking into the house rescued a man from the blaze but tragically found the body of a woman.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.
