M1 closed as cows escape onto motorway and trailer overturned

A major motorway was closed after a trailer carrying livestock overturned and cows escaped on the carriageway.

The M1 closed after the animals escaped onto the motorway causing chaos.

National Highways Yorkshire said a full closure of the motorway was put in place at Tinsley and diversions were put in place.

Motorists were warned: "M1 Southbound J34 Tinsley full closure in place.

"Traffic officers are currently dealing with a single vehicle accident including 2 loose cows in the carriage way.

"All traffic will be diverted off and can re join via the entry slip."

Yorkshire Live reported that all traffic has been stopped on the M1 near Sheffield after two cows made their way onto the carriageway.

It said traffic management system Inrix is reporting that "all traffic is being temporarily held" with "queueing traffic due to two cows on road and accident on M1 in both directions.

The traffic disruption happened at Junction 34 at the A631 Tinsley Viaduct (Meadowhall).

Reports suggest an accident happened first which resulted in the cows escaping from the vehicle which was carrying them.

Cameras show the cows on the busy carriageway resulting in all traffic being held.

Highways England reported: "Traffic officers are currently dealing with a single vehicle accident including 2 loose cows in the carriage way.

"All traffic will be diverted off and can re join via the entry slip."

South Yorkshire Police later updated: "The M1 is currently closed at Tinsley viaduct due to there being livestock on the carriageway. Please plan your route and avoid the area if you can."

Agencies later updated their information as lanes reopened,.

Yorkshire Live reported there was congestion before J36 (Barnsley South / Hoyland).

Lane three remained closed, but the road re-opened just before 10.50am after a trailer overturned just before 9am. The northbound carriageway, re-opened by 10.35am.

South Yorkshire Police updated: "The M1 Northbound is now open.

"Lane 3 on the Southbound carriageway remains closed and is expected to be closed for the next few hours.

"Delays are expected so please plan your route. Thank you for your patience at this time."
