M1 closed 'all day' leaving football fans in traffic and struggling to make FA Cup games

Football fans are facing travel chaos this Saturday after the M1 was closed following a serious crash involving two lorries.

The motorway, which connects London to Leeds, has been shut in both directions between junction 13 near Milton Keynes and junction 12 in Flitwick.

It is likely to remain closed for the rest of the day, with Highways England and emergency services warning of severe delays as a result of the collision.

A total of six FA Cup third round games are set to be affected by the closure of the M1.

Aston Villa fans travelling to Fulham were even instructed in a statement from Highways England to use the M40 instead if travelling from Birmingham.

To make matters worse for the Villa supporters, Fulham Palace Road - where away coaches park - has also been closed in both directions due to an unrelated incident.

Other games possibly affected include Brentford's clash with Stoke as well as Watford's fixture with Tranmere.

An alternative route for some fans is the M6, but this is notoriously busy at the best of times and set to be even more so given the added congestion from drivers diverting.

Below is a full list of possibly affected matches this Saturday:

Burnley vs Peterborough (12:31)

Preston vs Norwich (15:01)

Watford vs Tranmere (15:01)

Fulham vs Aston Villa (15:01)

Brentford vs Stoke (15:01)

Leicester vs Wigan (17:31)

Traffic camera images from the crash show one of the lorries badly wrecked from the impact, with much debris scattered on the motorway.

The trapped traffic has now been cleared from the area.

Bedfordshire Police said in a statement: "Emergency services are currently at the scene of a serious road traffic collision on the southbound carriageway of the M1.

"We were called at around 6.43am this morning [Saturday] to reports that two HGVs had been involved in a collision between J13 and J12.

"The motorway is currently closed in both directions while we and fellow emergency services deal with the incident.

"Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting Op Effervescence."
