M1 accident: Carriageway to close for resurfacing after lorry smashes through barrier

Highways bosses have revealed the southbound stretch of the M1 is not expected to open until tomorrow morning after a multi-vehicle crash sent a lorry smashing into the central reservation.

There have been delays throughout the day following the incident near Leicester Forest East service station between junctions 21 and 21a.

Two people have been taken to hospital although Leicestershire Police confirmed earlier that no one is thought to have suffered any life-changing injuries.

The fire service, police, Highways England, the ambulance service and the air ambulance all attended the scene of the crash near Leicester Forest East services.

Highways England has now revealed the southbound side of the carriageway will need to be resurfaced.

Traffic monitoring company INRIX meanwhile reports the northbound side has reopened.

A Highways England East Midlands spokesman said: "The southbound will need to be fully closed again to allow resurfacing to take place.

"The 22 SB will be closed in around two hours, with the A46 access being closed in three to four.

"The resurfacing will take place overnight and the M1 will then be reopened at some point tomorrow morning."
