M&S, Waitrose and Asda pay tribute to Prince Philip's 'extraordinary service to the nation'

The world has come together today (April 9) to mourn the death of Duke of Edinburgh, who died aged 99.

Figureheads from across the globe have voiced their sadness and condolences to the royal family following Prince Philip's death.

Flags above public buildings are to be lowered to half-mast, and all royal public appearances are cancelled until further notice.

Television newsreaders will wear black as a mark of respect., and MPs will wear black armbands in Parliament. This will last until the funeral, which is expected to take place in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

As well as world leaders, European royal families and celebrities, supermarkets have also paid tribute to the national hero.

A spokesperson for Asda tweeted: "From everyone at Asda, our deepest condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family on the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh."

While chiefs at Waitrose & Partners wrote: "We are deeply saddened by the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh and profoundly grateful for his extraordinary service to the nation over so many years.

"We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Her Majesty The Queen and The Royal Family."

And M&S tweeted: "We’re saddened to hear of the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. Our thoughts are with The Queen and The Royal Family at this time. Your M&S family."
