M&S to hire 12,000 seasonal in-store staff this Christmas

High street giant Marks & Spencer has announced plans to hire thousands of temporary workers.

The retailer is looking for additional staff to help handle the busy festive period, promising a range of benefits to its new temporary recruits - including a 20% discount both online and in-store.

The company says there may also be some openings for permanent jobs once the Christmas season has ended, and is looking to have workers in store from early December, reports the Birmingham Mail.

The announcement comes as the festive recruitment season intensifies, with online retailer Amazon offering £3,000 signing-on benefits to seasonal employees.

M&S is hiring staff in its home and clothing departments as well as its food outlets.

Stores director Helen Milford said the new recruits would help "deliver the famous M&S magic and sparkle our customers know us for" this festive season.

Salaries for customer assistants start at £9.50 per hour, or £10.25 in London.

In addition, M&S wants to hire 750 seasonal and permanent operatives at its Milton Keynes and Bradford warehouses, fulfilling online orders.
