M&S 'solves' scone cream or jam first problem - but shoppers are far from convinced

Scone lovers have told M&S to get clotted, lashing out at a half-baked idea to solve the riddle of which goes first, cream or jam.

In Cornwall the tradition is jam first, topped with cream, but in Devon it’s the reverse.

To please both sides, M&S mixed both jam and cream together to make Strawberry Clotted Cream, but now finds it is nobody’s cup of tea.

Actress and comic Dawn French, 62, who lives in Cornwall, slated the “appalling” £2.50 pink spread.

Dawn, whose home is a £3million mansion overlooking the River Fowey, posted: “There’s hell on. Am mobilising the Cornish Barbarian Horde... we will not rest til this battle is won and our cream is safe again.”

Another Cornish “jam first” fan threatened to boycott M&S, tweeting: “Absolute insult to Cornwall and our clotted cream.”

Another said: “Good job they shut M+S Falmouth as I could see clotted cream rioting.”

There was equal fury across the border in “cream first” Devon. The Paignton Poet, Chaz E Arnold, said M&S’s cream was “an abomination”.

Some have described it as an "abomination" (Marks and Spencer / SWNS)

In verse, he tweeted: “A cream and fruit Frankenstein,

“Their unholy blended creation,

“Will never be a purchase of mine.”

Others with no links to either county also waded in, branding the mix “utterly wrong” and “disgusting”.

M&S said the concoction, made in Devon, was created to “silence both parties”.

Calling it a “scone game changer”, it urged cream tea fans from both sides to try it.

April Preston, the chain’s director of product development, said: “Let us know if you’ve been converted.”

She said: “Jam first or cream first, there’s no doubt this question makes for a healthy debate.”
