Marks and Spencer has launched Colin the Caterpillar cupcakes.

The supermarket has created a cupcake version of its much-loved cake. The new product is in stores now and comes in boxes of six (priced at £5).

The cupcakes are topped with chocolate buttercream, sprinkles and a mini version of Colin the Caterpillar's signature white chocolate face.

The brand announced the new product on Instagram, with the news that you could now “have your favourite birthday cake all to yourself (or share, as they come in a pack of six)”.

An M&S spokesperson told The Independent: “Colin’s famous for being the tastiest birthday cake around... and now for the very first time, customers can enjoy their favourite caterpillar in cupcake form!

They added: “Colin and Connie have had a busy year, with Colin most recently being transformed for Easter with mini eggs and a top hat!

“The launch of our Giant Colin Face in January took social media by storm and became an immediate bestseller... now our brand new cupcakes are sure to once again send every fan wild!”

Mini versions of Colin the Caterpillar are already part of the supermarket’s line, but this is the first time M&S has created a cupcake version of its signature bakery item.

The new product launch is the latest Colin the Caterpillar spin-off. Previous products have included a spring-themed Flower Power Connie the Caterpillar for Mother’s Day, mini versions of the cartoon-like white chocolate face and a festive version of the cake, designed to look like a Christmas tree.

The original Colin the Caterpillar cake was launched by M&S in 1990 and the product celebrated 30 years last year. The supermarket has sold more than 15 million Colin the Caterpillar cakes since its launch.
