M&S gives thousands of staff an extra day's holiday to mark Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Thousands of M&S staff have been given an extra day of holiday to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The high street favourite said workers in stores, distribution centres, and customer services will get the bonus day of holiday.

They can use this extra holiday day across any of the four days which runs from Thursday, June 2 to Sunday, June 5. The long weekend marks the 70th anniversary of The Queen's accession to the throne.

M&S stores will be open throughout the weekend, apart from a small number, and some may have reduced opening hours. The extra day holiday is to allow staff to celebrate the national event with family and friends, and to thank them for their work.

Helen Milford, M&S Stores Director said: “Everyone at M&S is looking forward to celebrating this historic national occasion in just a few months’ time. To help our colleagues celebrate, we’re pleased to be giving them an additional day of holiday to use over the Jubilee weekend. We hope they enjoy the celebrations.”

Jubilee beacons are to be lit in all 54 Commonwealth capitals for the first time, spanning five continents, as part of the celebrations marking the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

Commonwealth nations and organisations have shared their plans for the festivities. Beacons will be set ablaze on the evening of Thursday June 2, beginning in Wellington, New Zealand, and Canberra, Australia, before being lit across the Pacific region, through Asia, then the 19 African Commonwealth member states, followed by Europe, and the Caribbean and Americas.

More than 1,500 beacons will be set on fire across the UK with the principal beacon at Buckingham Palace as part of a long tradition of marking significant royal occasions this way.
