M&S extends trial of DIY food refill scheme

Marks & Spencer is set to extend the trial of a scheme which allows customers to refill food products using their own containers.

The retailer said over three-quarters of consumers were actively trying to reduce the amount of packaging they use.

The initial “fill your own” scheme took place at M&S’ Hedge End store in Southampton, which offered 44 packaging-free products from coffee to confectionery.

It will now roll out the trial nationwide after branding it a huge success, reports BirminghamLive .

M&S’s recent survey results found that the main barrier to refill schemes is finding retailers that offer them.

This was cited by 38 per cent of consumers, followed by 18 per cent who highlighted the need to carry containers around.

Shoppers can fill their own coffee, confectionery and plenty else besides.

According to the  Guardian  , customers can also get cereal, raisins, rice and pasta.

M&S will be bringing the trial to Manchester, in the North West, next.

M&S’s director of food technology, Paul Willgoss, said: “Our ‘fill your own’ concept is one area we’re focusing on as part of our action to reduce plastic packaging and support our customers to reuse and recycle."

The spokesperson for the company continued: "We’re keen to better understand refill across the entire store process from behind the scenes operations to working with our customers to encourage behaviour change.”
