M&S Edinburgh: Stores to stay open until midnight in days leading up to Christmas

Marks & Spencer has announced that it will be extending opening hours until midnight to help those seeking one final dash before Christmas.

The popular retailer will allow customers to browse their aisles until the clock strikes 12 in the hopes it will bring in extra revenue.

Currently, M&S is operating on a food-only basis in England, with some stores in Scotland about to enter level four restrictions, meaning only essential items can be sold.

To combat this, they will introduce the longest ever opening hours the chain has ever seen over Christmas.

The news come as Marks and Spencer announced that they would be making 7,000 job cuts earlier this year due to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

In August, the store said they hoped most of the cuts would come from voluntary redundancy and early retirement.

To boost revenue and give shoppers longer to browse, 400 stores will take on the new hours from December 21-23, with the remainder of stores staying open until 10pm.

M&S retail, operations and property director Sacha Berendji said: "We want our customers to be able to shop with confidence this Christmas, which means supporting social distancing in our stores and minimal queueing outside as the weather gets colder."
