M&S Broadmead looks almost unrecognisable barely a day after permanent closure

Bristol's flagship Marks & Spencer store looks unrecognisable less than 24 hours after it was closed for the final time.

The iconic city centre branch, which opened in 1952 after the redevelopment of Broadmead, closed several hours early yesterday - leaving shoppers disappointed to miss the final hours of its closing-down sale.

However, less than 12 hours later, the branding outside the store has been removed leaving an empty void in the city centre.

Despite some M&S signs showing in one of the windows, the huge shop front sign had been removed.

One Twitter user shared a photo at 20.42pm yesterday evening (January 8) showing workers already dismantling the sign.

The store had been bustling with customers yesterday who were eager to make the most of huge discounts on food, alcohol, clothes and other items.

Large queues of customers were pictured inside the unrecognisable store as shelves were stripped of produce and clothing rails packed away during the 50 per cent off closing-down sale.

Photos from inside the venue show the bare shelves on the final day of trading.

Speaking ahead of the closure, M&S regional manager John Dorrington said: “Shopping habits are changing, so we’re rotating our store estate to make sure we have the right stores to offer our customers a brilliant shopping experience.

“We appreciate that this will be disappointing news for some, and we would like to thank all our customers who have shopped with us in the store. We will be working hard to keep serving them in our 17 stores across the South West including Cribbs Causeway and Longwell Green."

The closure is part of a wider UK property reshape by M&S, which has 17 other shops across the South West, including at Cribbs Causeway and in Longwell Green.

Although it does not own the property outright, it is understood M&S has a financial interest in the Broadmead building and will be working with Bristol City Council on plans for its future redevelopment.
