M&S Broadmead: Long queues and bare shelves as Bristol bids farewell to beloved store

It's a sad day for Bristol today as the city bids farewell to one of its best-loved shops.

M&S in Broadmead is shutting its doors for good having been a part of Bristol's shopping quarter since 1952.

The store is bustling with customers today, eager to make the most of huge discounts on food, alcohol, clothes and other items.

UPDATE: Shoppers turned away as M&S shuts hours early on last day

It looks almost unrecognisable as shelves are stripped of produce and clothing rails are packed away, with members of staff visibly sad to see the store go.

Pictures taken at around 11.30am show large queues of customers taking advantage of a 50 per cent off sale.

Meanwhile the first and second floors, where you'll find menswear, a café and toilets, are already shut to customers.

The decision to close the Broadmead store, which was made last year, has been driven largely by changing consumer habits in the retail industry, which has seen a major shift towards online shopping in recent years, according the M&S.

M&S regional manager John Dorrington said: “Shopping habits are changing, so we’re rotating our store estate to make sure we have the right stores to offer our customers a brilliant shopping experience.

“We appreciate that this will be disappointing news for some, and we would like to thank all our customers who have shopped with us in the store. We will be working hard to keep serving them in our 17 stores across the South West including Cribbs Causeway and Longwell Green.

The closure is part of a wider UK property reshape by M&S, which has 17 other shops across the South West, including at Cribbs Causeway and in Longwell Green.

Although it does not own the property outright, it is understood M&S has a financial interest in the Broadmead building and will be working with Bristol City Council on plans for its future redevelopment.
