M&S and Aldi slug it out on Twitter as Colin the Caterpillar rammy rages on

High street favourite Marks & Spencer has been mocked for its lame Twitter reply to rival Aldi as the 'Colingate' row shows no sign of cooling.

We reported this week how the retail giant are locked in a legal spat with M&S launching legal action against Aldi to protect its Colin the Caterpillar cake, claiming that its rival's Cuthbert the Caterpillar infringes its trademark.

German chain Aldi stopped selling the cake in February, two months before it was accused of infringing the Colin the Caterpillar trademark.

But after bosses confirmed Cuthbert is set to make a return to stores in a good cause, Twitter once again went into meltdown over the response from M&S.

The Mirror reports how Aldi bosses announced a limited-edition version of the cake is set to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support.

"Hey Marks and Spencer we're taking a stand against caterpillar cruelty. Can Colin and Cuthbert be besties?" said Aldi on Twitter.

"We're bringing back a limited edition Cuthbert next month and want to donate all profits to cancer charities including your partners Macmillan Cancer Support and ours Teenage Cancer Trust," it said, with the hashtag #caterpillarsforcancer.

But M&S has faced a slew of criticism on social media after they suggested the supermarket creates a cake featuring Kevin the Carrot instead.

M&S tweeted back: "Hey @AldiUK we love a charity idea (Colin's been a BIG fundraiser for years). We just want you to use your own character.

"How about #kevinthecarrotcake ? That idea's on us... and we promise we won't do Keith."

But the tweet didn't hit the mark with many, who urged the national chain to reconsider the suggestion.

Colin the Caterpillar was launched by M&S about 30 years ago and has helped raise money for cancer charity Macmillan over the years.

One person tweeted: "M&S turning down an offer to support cancer charities, took their social media team hours to come up with this sad little reply .... clearly not reading the room."

Another commented: "Colin's fundraising achievements are not in question, but Kevin has raised lots of money for @TeenageCancer, over the years. Why not work together, and start rooting for both these causes?"

A third replied: "Read the room M&S!! All the other supermarkets love this #caterpillarsforcancer idea. I would now deliberately not buy one from M&S based on this tweet."

A fourth joked: "This tweet has mum-telling-you-off-in-a-public-place-under-her-voice energy."

One customer added: "This is getting pathetic now."
