M&Co announces closure of Girvan store but confirms Ayr and Troon shops will continue trading

Girvan’s last High Street chain clothes shop has shut for good.

M&Co has been a staple of Dalrymple Street for decades.

The firm is keeping the Ayr and Troon shops open.

They are local to the national chain’s property director Neil McGeoch who lives on a farm outside Tarbolton.

The Girvan store was cleared out last week.

Staff being made redundant say they are very “angry” at the circumstances.

Kirsty Galloway, responding to floods of good wishes on social media, said: “It’s so nice to read nice comments about our wee team and store.

“Please keep us all in mind if you hear of any jobs going, because with all the losses through COVID it is going to be tough to find one.”

The Girvan shop was in a prime central spot on the corner with Ailsa Street East.

Inchinnan-based M&Co is axing 380 staff and shutting 47 stores, leaving 218 open after a restructure while in administration.

Chief executive Andy McGeoch said: “It quickly became clear that best way to save most jobs and most stores was to enter administration, with a new company acquiring the assets of the old business, and this process has now been finalised.

“Covid has been by far the biggest challenge our family business has faced in almost 60 years, and I am really pleased that we have been able to maintain a presence in over 200 communities.

“The most difficult part of this process is undoubtedly seeing around 380 colleagues in stores and at our Glasgow and London operations leaving the business.

“It’s a terrible situation for them and I’m desperately sorry that we couldn’t come up with a viable plan which would have saved all the jobs.”
