
A strong earthquake hit the Tohoku region on Saturday morning.
The quake, with an estimated magnitude of 6.8, took place off Miyagi Prefecture at 10:27 a.m. Its focus was 51 kilometers deep. No tsunami warning was issued.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake, measuring upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7, was felt in Ishinomaki, Osaki and Wakuya in Miyagi Prefecture, while a lower 5 registered in Hashikami, Aomori Prefecture, and Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture. A lower 5 was also recorded in Miyagino Ward, Sendai, and Soma, Fukushima Prefecture, among other places. A jolt registering 4 was felt in Yamagata, Akita, Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures.
According to Japan Railway companies, bullet train services were suspended on some sections on the Tohoku, Akita and Yamagata Shinkansen lines. Operations were also temporarily suspended between Tokyo and Kakegawa in Shizuoka Prefecture on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line.
