Lyric to premiere youth opera 'Jason'

May 09--"Jason and the Argonauts," a new opera for youth commissioned by Lyric Opera through its Lyric Unlimited education and community engagement and new artistic initiatives department, will receive its world premiere in four free performances Aug. 20-21 at Chicago's Vittum Theater.

Inspired by an iconic Greek myth, the children's opera follows the hero Jason's quest for the Golden Fleece and his rightful throne. On his journey he encounters people and animals that help him fulfill his destiny.

Fourth in a series of Lyric Unlimited premieres, "Jason and the Argonauts" will have music by composer Gregory Spears and libretto by playwright Kathryn Walat. With a cast of four singers and an ensemble of four musicians, the chamber opera will be staged by Loren Meeker. Designers Joe Schermoly and Theresa Ham are creating the set and costumes, respectively.

Performances are at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Aug. 20, also 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Aug. 21, at the Vittum Theater, 1012 N. Noble St. The opera will be given in partnership with Chicago's National Hellenic Museum and is recommended for children ages 7 to 12.

Although there is no admission charge, tickets will be required. For further information and to reserve tickets, visit www.lyricopera.org/argonauts.
