Lyra McKee's family releases statement thanking public for 'every single sentiment no matter how small'

The family of journalist Lyra McKee has released a statement thanking the public for their support in "the darkest of times".

The 29-year-old was shot and killed while reporting on riots in the Fanad Drive area of Creggan, Derry on April 18.

In a statement released through their solicitor this evening, Lyra's family has extended their gratitude to those who have been supporting them, Belfast Live reports.

The statement read: "Dear friends, We, the family of Lyra McKee, wish to extend our gratitude to all those who have been supporting us through the darkest of times and to those who will continue to do so.

"The outpouring of love, respect and admiration for our dear Lyra, has been of great comfort to us in these dark days. To know that our wee Lyra was so well-loved across the globe and by people of all walks of life, is a true testament to her personal philosophy and her vision for the world.

"We are mindful that we may not be able to thank everyone individually, however, we want everyone who: said a prayer; shared a thought; sent a message, card or text; attended a vigil; attended or watched her service; visited her home; travelled; respected our privacy; or did any other positive act in response to Lyra’s murder to know that we appreciate every single sentiment no matter how small; these things have helped to give us some strength while we are at our weakest."

Hundreds of people turned out for the LGBT activist's funeral, which was held at St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast, and heard a rallying call for her death to mark the return of MLAs to Stormont.

The statement added: "Whilst we have been both honoured and overwhelmed by requests for events in Lyra’s name or inspired by Lyra; we respectfully request that before anyone uses her life or death for any purpose that they consider her legacy of inclusivity and understanding.

"We know that as our nightmare continues in the weeks, months and years ahead, that we will not be alone. We know that you will all continue to support us and we know that we will all rejoice together on the day that justice is achieved for our Lyra.

"Until then, know that your continued love, support and sympathy will be our spiritual manna. In gratitude and love, The family of Lyra McKee.”
