As police launched a murder enquiry, one local officer from Derry made a passionate play to the world about not judging Derry by the actions of those responsible for Lyra's death.

The officer said: "My heart is breaking.

"It’s breaking for the members of the public who rushed to Lyra McKee’s aid. It is breaking for the Officers who gave first aid and sped her through the burning blockade to the hospital.

"It is breaking for the NHS staff who did all they could to save her. It is breaking for the reputation of this great, loving, welcoming City I’m proud to serve. But most of all it is breaking for the family, friends, colleagues and loved ones of Lyra McKee. What an unfathomable loss and tragedy they are facing today.

Lyra McKee TED talk a reminder of why murdered journalist was so highly thought of

"For those who don’t know this City. Don’t judge us by this.

"We saw Police with politicians & Church leaders from all sides stood in Creggan today mourning together. Judge us by that.

"We’ve seen thousands of people from every part of the City coming out and saying, “not in my name”. Judge us by that.

"Come visit the City on any day and experience the warmth, humour and love of its inhabitants. Judge us by that."
