Lyra McKee: Man charged with rioting offences by police investigating journalist's murder

A 53-year-old man has been charged with rioting offences in Northern Ireland by police investigating the murder of Lyra McKee.

The 29-year-old journalist was killed when she was shot by dissident republicans on April 18, 2019 in the Creggan area of Derry.

An extremist group styling itself as the New IRA claimed responsibility.

PSNI detectives from the force's Major Investigations Team charged a man on Sunday in relation to rioting offences on the night of Ms McKee's murder.

The man was charged with "riot, assault and throwing petrol bombs", the PSNI said.

He is due to appear before Derry Magistrates' Court on Monday.

All charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

Meanwhile, a 44-year-old man also arrested on Friday has been released pending a report to the PPS.
