Manchester City bounce back twice against Lyon to secure spot in last-16

Aymeric Laporte and Sergio Aguero struck as Manchester City twice came from behind to qualify for the Champions League last 16 with a 2-2 draw at Lyon.

The outstanding Maxwel Cornet grabbed both goals for the hosts, who outplayed the Premier League champions for large spells at the Groupama Stadium.

The Ivory Coast forward opened the scoring in the 55th minute and restored the lead after Laporte's first equaliser, but Aguero had the final word.

The result was enough to ensure City will play in the knockout stages, but they will have to wait until the visit of Hoffenheim next month to try to secure top spot in Group F.

Given the way the game unfolded, City will be glad to be leaving France with a result.

Welcome!

The Champions League is back! Headlining our live blog action tonight is Manchester United vs Young Boys and Lyon vs Manchester City. City have nine points from their opening four games and another point here would guarantee their progress to the last 16, despite that slip up against Lyon when these two sides met at the Etihad. United's position is a little more precarious, and they cannot afford to slip up against the Group H stragglers if they are to come through their three-way battle with Juventus and Valencia, who meet tonight in Turin. Harry will be along shortly with all the team news and build-up to kick-off at 8pm GMT

Lyon vs Manchester City

Evening all...

Yes, the Champions League is back! It is a Tuesday night, both Manchester clubs are in action and there are a host of other games on as well.

As you can see the Manchester City team is out already and we are expecting confirmation of the three other starting lineups imminently, so let's get to it...

TEAM NEWS

Here's how the hosts line up in Lyon. They include former City centre-half Jason Denayer in their back five.
TEAM NEWS

Lineups are in from Old Trafford, too.

Jose Mourinho's side looks like this:
TEAM NEWS

The Swiss visitors have named their team, too, on a team sheet which helpfully visualises both sides in graphical form...
After Manchester United's dramatic win in Turin, a victory tonight could take them through to the knockout stages should Valencia fail to win at Juventus tonight. That is also an 8pm kick-off, and we will have score updates of all the fixtures being played in the competition this evening at half-time and after the full-time whistle blows...

Manchester City are almost assured of qualification.

Despite losing against their opponents tonight, they lead the group on nine points and a draw in Lyon this evening would be enough to progress.

But Pep Guardiola and his team will be looking for a win...

BSC Young Boys are Manchester United's opponents this evening. Based in Bern, they won the Swiss Super League last season and are already 16 points clear after just 15 games this.

One of their key attacking influences is Miralem Sulejmani, who very nearly joined West Ham in 2010 while at Ajax. The Serbian winger agreed a move to England on loan, but was denied a work permit.

Aymeric Laporte may just be the best footballer in the world without a single international cap.

He starts in the country of his birth tonight, and Jack Pitt-Brooke dissected how the centre-back has helped take Manchester City to even greater heights.

15 minutes until kick-off.

Do you need a refresher of all the possible permutations of tonight's game at Old Trafford? Then here you go...

News from Athens - Ajax are through with a 2-0 victory over AEK. Bayern Munich should join them in the knockout stages from Group E.

Will both Manchester clubs also make their way through? Kick-off is imminent at Old Trafford and the Groupama Stadium in Lyon...

KICK OFF
In Lyon and in Manchester, both games are underway.
Lyon 0-0 Manchester City, 2 minutes

An interesting tactical option taken by Pep Guardiola tonight, with Kyle Wlaker seemingly on the right of a back three also containing John Stones and Aymeric Laporte.

Lyon have picked what is, for all intents and purposes, a back five, so Guardiola has gone like-for-like.
Lyon 0-0 Manchester City, 4 minutes

Memphis Depay nips in behind and nearly latches on to a pass over the top, forcing John Stones to clear for a corner.

The Dutchman's resulting corner is into a dangerous area and City are perhaps fortunate to smuggle it clear from Aymeric Laporte's powerful header.

Good start from the French side.
Manchester United 0-0 Young Boys, 4 minutes

Early chance for Marcus Rashford.

Luke Shaw's forward pass is too heavy for Jesse Lingard, but LIngard manages to just about get a toe on it which inadvertently takes it perfectly into the onrushing Rashford's path.

Rashford is one-on-one with David von Ballmoos but finds only the top of the net with his lofted effort.

He should really have scored...
Lyon 0-0 Manchester City, 8 minutes

Looking more like a four now from Manchester City with Aleksandr Zinchenko at left-back, as most felt they would arrange themselves tonight..

Lyon continuing to press well, but the visitors are starting to get their possession game going.
Manchester United 0-0 Young Boys, 8 minutes

Jean-Pierre Nsame cuts inside and fires a fairly tame shot goalwards. The Ivorian's effort did take a deflection, and Young Boys will have a corner.

It is a little too shallow and only finds a Manchester United head.
Lyon 0-0 Manchester City, 13 minutes

That's a bad miss from Memphis Depay.

Lyon work space on the right and cross towards the Dutchman who is in excellent position in the Manchester City box, but he takes his eye of his volley and it goes rather awry.

At the other end, Riyad Mahrez has an equally opportune moment but can't beat Anthony Lopes, who holds onto his shot.

An open start in Lyon.

What time is it?
