Lyon VAR offside decision against Man City explained by ex-ref Peter Walton

Former referee Peter Walton has insisted that Moussa Dembele's pivotal goal for Lyon against Manchester City wasn't offside.

Pep Guardiola's side crashed out of the Champions League in dramatic fashion on Saturday night after a 3-1 reverse in the quarter-final.

Having equalised through Kevin de Bruyne, the game swung when Dembele put Lyon back in front, despite City defenders protesting that the goal should have been disallowed.

The ball was played through for Karl Toko Ekambi, who was offside, but he stepped over the ball to allow Dembele to run onto it, before slotting past Ederson.

To compound matters further, City felt Aymeric Laporte was tripped just before Dembele latched onto the ball, adding insult to injury.

However, Walton explained that the goal was right to stand from an offside-perspective, with VAR only checking for a foul, which wasn't given.

"No, it's not a factor (that it runs through his legs)," he told BT Sport.

"What they're probably looking at is, is their a foul on Laporte that stopped him covering the ball? The offside is pretty much clear that it's not offside but was their a foul in the build-up to that goal?

"We can see it here, on the offside, does the opponent interfere with the player playing the ball? No, he doesn't.

"Does he touch the ball? No, he doesn't. So the offside is immaterial, it's the foul in the build-up that will cause some problems with the Manchester City people.

Two uncharacteristic errors from Raheem Sterling and Ederson inside a minute cost City the third goal, with the former missing an open goal, before the goalkeeper spilt a tame shot, allowing Dembele to make it 3-1.
