Here’s your match report. Thanks for reading. Bye!

Leonardo Bonucci speaks ...

“We were second to every ball in the first half – I don’t know why,” the Juventus skipper has told Uefa. “Something went wrong with our approach, I could sense from before kick off that something had not switched on. We were all far from each other in the first half, making everything easy for Lyon. We need to work hard ahead of the return leg because we cannot afford another game like this in Turin.”

Match report: Real Madrid 1-2 Manchester City

David Hytner was at the Bernabeu to see Manchester City come from behind to beat Real Madrid. Here’s how he saw the match unfold ...

Meanwhile in Spain: Manchester City came from behind to beat Real Madrid by the odd goal of three, in a game that marked the 26th red card of Sergio Ramos’s career. Simon Burnton watched that one ...

Lyon celebrate: The French side’s players lap up the applause of their fans, who show no sign of leaving any time soon. They’ve every right to be proud of their time, who defended very stoutly tonight.

Full-time: Lyon 1-0 Juventus

Peep! Peep! Peeeeeeeeep! For only the second time this season, Juventus are held scoreless and have a one-goal deficit to overturn in the second leg. Lyon have beaten the Italian champions for the first time in their history and go to Turin with the most slender of advantages. Lucas Tousart’s goal separates the sides at half-time in this tie.

90+3 min: Ronaldo leaps to get on the end of an Alex Sandro cross at the far post. His downwards header bounces wide of the upright. He collides with Marcal in mid-air and the pair engage in a bit of “afters”

90+1 min: We’re into five minutes of added time and Juventus have yet to have a shot on target. Lyon have defended brilliantly tonight although you could argue they’ve ridden their luck at times.

89 min: Ronaldo does brilliantly to keep a Bernardeschi cross that was heading wide in play. He sends a header into the Lyon penalty area from the byline, trying to tee up Dybala. He goes he appears to be grappled to the ground by Guimaraes and appeals for a penalty but doesn’t get one. I was sure Juve would get a spot-kick there.

85 min: Moments after shooting wide when he should have done better, Dybala has the ball in the Lyon net after lashing home ... only to be correctly flagged for offside.

84 min: Ronaldo tries to get on the end of a clipped Ramsey cross from deep but skims his header wide. He goes to ground, claiming to have been pushed in the back by Jason Denayer, but the referee and his video assistants are having none of it.

83 min: Incredible scenes at the Bernabeu, as Manchester City score a penalty for the first time in 3,415 attempts. Kevin De Bruyne makes it 2-1 to the visitors against Real Madrid.

82 min: Higuain tries to head a cross from Danilo goalwards, but the delivery is slightly behind him and he can’t get enough power on his effort after stretching every sinew to reach it.

82 min: Maxwell Cornet is helped off by two of Lyon’s backroom staff and replaced by Joachim Andersen.

80 min: Meanwhile in Spain,, Gabriel Jesus has restored parity for Manchester City against Real Madrid. It’s 1-1 at the Bernabeu.

79 min: Juve corner, won by Aaron Ramsey. Moussa Dembele clears the inswinger with a header, but only as far as Paulo Dybala. He whacks it on the half-volley but his effort fizzes over the bar.

79 min: Juventus substitution: Adrien Rabiot off, Federico Bernardeschi on.

78 min: Lyon substitution: Kenny Tete on for Leo Dubois.

74 min: Lyon press and probe around the edges of the Lyon penalty area, but for the time being at least, the French side are defending in a very compact manner and offering them no way through.

72 min: Deep in Lyon territory, Ramsey is penalised for a foul on Cornet, who goes to ground holding his ankle.

70 min: Juventus substitution: Gonzalo Higuain comes on for Juan Cuadrado, who has had a quiet night.

69 min: Dybala snatches at a cross from Alex Sandro and sends the ball flashing wide of the left upright off his shin. From six yards out!!!

67 min: Lyon substitution: Ekambi, who has been a constant menace tonight goes off to a well earned round of applause from the home crowd. Martin Terrier comes on to snarl and snap around the ankles of various Juventus players.

65 min: Alex Sandro tries a shot from distance but Denayer blocks that one as well. Lyon are dropping back, defending very deep.

63 min: Ramsey gets a shot away from the edge of the Lyon penalty area, but it’s smothered by Jason Denayer.

62 min: Juventus substitution: Aaron Ramsey is on, with Miralem Pjanic making way for the Welshman. Juve have not yet had a shot in target and are playing poorly by their own high standards.

61 min: Yellow card - Maxwell Cornet is booked for a foul on Paulo Dybala. He tackled him from behind and it’s not his first offence either.

59 min: Meanwhile in Spain, Isco has put Real Madrid a goal up against Manchester City.

57 min: A delivery into the Lyon box from Alex Sandro is gathered comfortably by Anthony Lopes in the home side’s goal.

55 min: Cornet catches Cuadrado with a kick and Juve have another free-kick on the fringe of the Lyon penalty area, between the right edge and the touchline. Dybala curls the ball into the penalty area with his left foot, but fails to clear Ekambi, the first defender. Poor from Juventus, again.

54 min: Lyon win another corner and this time it’s floated into the Juve penalty area. Juventus clear.

53 min: Ronaldo and Pjanic stand over the free-kick and it’s the midfielder from Bosnia and Herzogovina who takes it. Like Ronaldo before him, he hits the wall, with Moussa Dembele leaping to block his effort with his head.

51 min: Ronaldo draws a foul from Guimaraeas on the left side of the Lyon penalty area. It’s in a good position ...

50 min: Lyon take the corner short and Marcel arrows the ball towards the far post from a good angle. Jeve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny screams for the ball and claims it confidently.

49 min: Lyon win a corner, Cornet’s cross from the left going out off Danilo after good work down the flank from the lively Ekambi.

48 min: Marcal blocks an attempted cross from Danilo to put the ball out for a throw-in deep in Lyon territory. Nothing comes of it.

47 min: Much like the first half, Lyon dominate the very early stages of the second. Rodrigo Bentancur swings a cross into the Lyon penalty area from the left touchline, but puts too much power on his delivery, which bounces out for a throw-in on the far side.

Second half: Lyon 1-0 Juventus

46 min: Lyon get the ball rolling for the second half, hoping to beat Juventus for the first time ever. There are no changes in personnel on either side.

Meanwhile in Spain: It’s scoreless between Real Madrid and Manchester City in tonight’s other game. Simon Burnton is watching that one ...

Half-time: Lyon 1-0 Juventus

Peep: The home fans plead for the half-time whistle and get their wish. Their team lead at the break courtesy of Lucas Tousart’s scruffy goal on 32 minutes. Juventus have been far from convincing and have yet to trouble Anthony Lopes in the Lyon goal.

45 min: A sensational touch from Ronaldo on the edge of the Lyon penalty area forces Dubois to take him out. Free-kick for Juve, which Ronaldo will take. His effort is poor and is blocked by Dembele in the defensive wall.

43 min: Lyon advance with Akambi on the ball. With Dembele to his left, he opts not to slide the ball his teammate’s way and instead have a pop himself. His shot fizzes wide.

Updated

41 min: Akambi intercepts a pass from Pjanic meant for Bonucci, outruns the veteran centre-half and fires over the bar. The Italian champions are looking less than assured at the back this evening.

40 min: Bentancur puts the ball out for another Lyon corner after a powerful run into the Juve box by Cornet. They take it short and |Juve win possession and embark on an ill-fated counter-attack.

38 min: There’s a VAR check to see if Juan Cuadrado handled the ball in the Juventus penalty area. The ball hit his side and then his arm, which he was trying to move out of the way. Within seconds, the folks in Uefa’s equivalent of Stockley Park, tell the ref that Lyon won’t be getting a penalty on this occasion.

37 min: Danilo gets a telling-off, but no booking, for a rather agricultural challenge on Leo Dubois. Lucky boy.

35 min: Cristiano Ronaldo tries to curl a shot from the inside left around Lopes, but sends his effort wide of the far upright.

33 min: Mattijs de Ligt was off the field getting his head bandaged and returns to find his team a goal down. It wasn’t the prettiest of strikes, but Lyon and their supporters won’t care. The ball was crossed into the centre from the left by Houssem Aouar and Lucas Tousart leapt to shin a volley past Szczesny and inside the far post.

GOAL! Lyon 1-0 Juventus (Tousart 32)

Lyon take the lead! With Juve temporarily down to 10 men, Lyon go ahead through Lucas Tousart.

Updated

30 min: With blood pouring from a cut on his head, Mattijs de Ligt is told to go and get himself cleaned up by the referee. Replays suggest he appears to have been caught unintentionally by Moussa Dembele’s boot as he lay on the floor and the Lyon striker landed after contesting a high ball.

28 min: Lyon defender Marcelo is booked for catching Dybala with an elbow as he tried to twist away from the Juventus striker. There was no malice intended, but that doesn’t matter.

27 min: Alex Sandro tries his luck from distance with a left-footed surface-to-air effort that is too high and fizzes well wide of the Lyon goal.

24 min: After a dreary opening 20 minutes, things are picking up. Cristiano Ronaldo stands the ball up at the far post after good work down the left flank and with Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes missing the ball and Rodrigo Bentancur leaping for the header, Maxwell Cornet contorts his body in mid-air to clear with his own bonce.

23 min: Leo Dubois sends an excellent cross from the right into the Juve penalty area, forcing Matthijs de Ligt to head wide of his own goal for a corner under pressure from Dembele. Nothing comes from the ensuing set piece.

21 min: Juan Cuadrado gives away a corner, Lyon’s first of the game. The ball’s swung into the mixer by Houssem Auer and Ekambi’s near post flick beats Szczesny only to hit the bar. That’s a real let-off for Juve, who have been saved by the woodwork after Ekambi got in front of his marker.

Updated

20 min: Leo Dubois advances down the right wing with the ball at his feet and ends up trying a shot from distance, which is blocked.

19 min: Moussa Dembele uses his strength to outmuscle Bonucci and wins a free-kick in midfield for his troubles.

17 min: Lyon new boy Bruno Guimaraes, making only his second appearance for the club, spreads the play to the left wing for Cornet to collect, but he fails to get a cross into the Juve box.

14 min: Ronaldo is brought down from behind and wins a free-kick a few yards outside the Lyon penalty area, well right of centre. It looks to be in Paulo Dybala’s range, but the left-footer doesn’t take it on. Pjanic clips the ball into the box and it’s put out for a corner, from which nothing comes.

Updated

13 min: Content to let Juve have the ball, Lyon are masking no effort to press their opponents in their own half.

11 min: Lyon enjoy an extended spell of possession, but do nothing of note with it before returning the ball to Juventus. Alex Sandro gives the ball back to Lyon’s Leo Dubois, but he overhits his ball forward towards Karl Toko Ekambi.

8 min: Miralem Pjanic, a surprise inclusion in the Juve line-up tonight after his return from a spell on the sidelines, has settled into the game well and is spraying the ball around midfield. No chances of note to report thus far.

6 min: Moussa Dembele tries a shot at goal from distance that is deflected into the arms of Juve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. There’s a break in play as Lyon right-back Maxwell Cornet receives medical attention after a collision with Paulo Dybala.

4 min: Cristiano Ronaldo curls a cross towards the far post that looks like it might float in to the top right-hand corner. It appears to take a deflection off Jason Denayer on its way wide, but referee Jesus Gill Manzano awards a goal kick.

3 min: An early throw-in for Lyon, who have lined up with three central defenders and two wing-backs. Juventusa are playing a 4-3-3, with Rabiot in for Aaron Ramsey and no place for Giorgio Chiellini in their match-day squad after his recent return from a serious knee injury.

2 min: Juventus dominate possession in these very early stages, They give the ball away in midfield after a series of passes, but it’s quickly retrieved by Leonardo Bonucci.

Lyon v Juventus is go!!!

1 min: Juventua, their players wearing aqua-marine shirts, shorts and socks get the ball rolling. The players of Lyon are a vision in virginal white.

Not long now: The teams march out of the tunnel and line up either side of the referee and his team of match officials for the Champions League and the last of the pre-match formalities. Cristiano Ronaldo, standing proudly beneath the top-knot adorning the crown of his head, looks pumped.

Lyon v Juventus line-ups

Tonight’s referee

Jesus Gil Manzano, whose hand Leo Messi once refused to shake following a 2018 draw between Barcelona and Girona, is tasked with maintaining order during tonight’s game. Here’s hoping nobody leaves him hanging at the final whistle tonight.

Maurizio Sarri speaks ...

“Lyon are a technical team with elements of great acceleration and physicality,” said Juve’s manager, who is hoping to add the Champions League to the Europa League he won with Chelsea last season. They are a dangerous team so we have to put in a great performance.”

Asked about his star player, who has scored in nine consecutive games (bagging 13 goals in the process), Sarri was effusive in his praise. “Cristiano Ronaldo is a player who is appreciated all over the world,” he said. “His stats say enough about the state of his form. He is an enthralling player, and is well both from a physical and mental point of view. In Italy we have an obligation and responsibility to win. In Europe we are amongst ten other teams with this goal.”

Rudi Garcia speaks ...

“It’s a great challenge, a real pleasure to host them,” he said of Juventus. “We’re in the top 16 teams in Europe. Miralem Pjanić [former Garcia player at Roma, former Lyon player, now at Juve] is a person with great quality, incredibly skilled. He is a big strength of Juventus. We are happy to welcome Maurizio Sarri. He is a very good coach, with a lot of experience.”

Asked to elaborate, he had this to say of his opposite number. “Juventus play the same way that Napoli and Empoli did under Sarri,” he said. “He is a tactically astute coach: no doubt about it. We all thought Liverpool and Paris would win [in last week’s first legs]. Now it’s our turn to take our chance, and show our best form. We’ll need to do that to do well in the first leg against Juve. And let’s hope they do not play to 100% of their potential. If we just defend, we won’t win the game. If we are to prosper, we’ll need our fans’ support to find more energy and to be on our top form.”

Early team news

Lyon have been hit hard with injuries and will be without five players, including skipper Memphis Depay, who damaged his ACL in December. Left-back Youssouf Kone, midfielder Jeff Reine-Adelaide, right-back Rafael and central defender Oumar Solet have also been ruled out.

For Juventus, the evergreen Giorgio Chiellini made his come-back from a long-term knee-injury against Brescia last Sunday week, has since featured against Spal and looks likely to make his first Champions League appearance of the season tonight.

Midfielder Miraelm Pjanic, who spent three years at Lyon before moving to Italy in 2011, is less likely to start and Rodrigo Betancur could get the nod instead. Sami Khedira, Merih Demiral and Douglas Costa are all sidelined.

Champions League Round of 16 first leg: Lyon v Juventus

Parc Olympique Lyonnais (aka the Groupama Stadium to les bean-counters) is the venue for the latest in a series of intriguing knockout matches in this season’s Champions League.

Rudi Garcia’s Lyon have underwhelmed on the domestic and European fronts this season and currently sit seventh in Ligue 1. They go into this tie as underdogs against the Italian champions and league leaders, who are still looking to win that elusive first European title since – and this is scarcely believable – 1996.

Kick-off is at 8pm (GMT), but stay tuned for team news and build-up in the meantime.
