And up come the beaming Lyon players to receive their medals and congratulations before Dzsenifer Marozsán, in her home town, is given the trophy to hoist aloft amid much confetti and pyrotechnics.

As the postmatch pomp begins, Lyon give their beaten opponents a guard of honour and the officials march up to receive their medals, hastily followed by the stern-faced runners-up.

Full-time! Lyon 4-1 Barcelona

And that’s that. A sixth European title in nine years for Lyon, and surely their most straightforward. They came out of the traps with astonishing speed to blow away Barcelona in the first half an hour. After that it was a more even game – but it was one that was done and dusted. Lyon’s preposterous dominance of European football continues apace.

92 mins: Mbock heads a long ball confidently clear. Just moments now until Lyon clinch their fourth straight Champions League.

Goal! Lyon 4-1 (Oshoala)

A deserved consolation for Barcelona, and a deserved goal for the pacy Nigerian, who turns on the afterburners to meet a perfectly weighted defence-splitting pass by Martens. Her first touch takes her past the onrushing keeper, and her second slides the ball home. Perhaps she should have played from the start …

85 mins: Hegerberg wants a fourth. First she finds herself on the end of a low ball in from Bronze, but her shot is charged down. Then she latches on to a dinked through-ball from midfield but is flagged marginally offside.

82 mins: And that’s her last contribution. Le Sommer is replaced by Bacha.

80 mins: Two chances in a minute for Le Sommer, both coming in the inside left channel after being fed by a teammate who had stolen possession. The first is curled tamely into the keeper’s gloves, the second struck more firmly but, again, doesn’t truly test Panos, who palms away. Barcelona bring on for Van der Gragt for Pereira.

78 mins: Losada strides down the right and lofts in a cross that Oshoala, who has been a handful since coming on, heads off target under pressure from two defenders.

74 mins: And another great chance for Barcelona arrives from nowhere, the Lyon defence hesitating and letting a long ball bounce into Losada’s path. She needs to loft a bouncing ball over Bouhaddi and into an empty net, but her shot doesn’t drop in time and lands on the roof of the goal. She probably should have scored.

Updated

71 mins: Majri, who has been terrific fun all game, pops up inside the penalty box from open play to meet a cross from the right, heading just wide. Fishlock goes off for Kumagai.

69 mins: And that’s all we’ll see from Toni Duggan. She makes way for Oshala.

68 mins: Chance for Barca! And it’s a really well-worked one, Duggan spinning to pick out Bonmati, who squares again to Losada. Her floated corss is flicked on by Putellas and falls to Mertens, inside the six yard box, but she steers a half-volley wide of the near post!

65 mins: The game’s tempo has unsurprisingly dropped down a notch. Hegerberg gets a half-chance to plunder a fourth, as a half-cleared set-piece drops to her feet inside the box, but she miskicks with a snapshot, barely even connecting.

Updated

63 mins: Lyon substitution – Cascarino comes on for Van der Sanden, who has been a constant threat.

59 mins: Duggan, frustrated, gives away a needless free-kick deep inside her own half. Marozsan’s cross sails clear of everyone, but the ball is diverted back into the box by Hederberg, then cleared.

Updated

Some correspondence. “I really do not like Pep, and, by extension, Barcelona. This scoreline is making me smile,” writes Matt Dony.

Matt: whatever you do, don’t flick over to BBC1.

52 mins: The game’s best move comes as Le Sommer checks inside from the left wing and zips a ball into the feet of Marozsan on the edge of the box, who lays it back off with a first-time flick. Steaming on to the return, Le Sommer’s curling shot from distance flies just over. Lovely football.

50 mins: More inroads from Barcelona. First Mariona escapes down the right and sweeps in a high cross, met by the imperious Renard. Then Duggan forages into the box, but is crowded out.

48 mins: Barca start the second half how the ended the first: with a spell of tidy possession. It’s all harmless enough, though, Lyon keeping them at arm’s length and pouncing once they threaten to enter the final third.

And the second half is under way. Duggan presses high, making a nuisance of herself and eventually committing a foul.

Updated

Lyon trot back out for the second half, shortly followed by their rather crestfallen-looking opponents. They certainly don’t look geed up. Let’s see how they play.

A penny for the thoughts of Barcelona, who having not conceded a goal in six Champions League fixtures before this found themselves four down after half an hour. And as reacting-to-breakneck-four-goal-deficits goes, they did fairly well, asserting themselves in the latter stages of the half and even carving out a half-chance or two. But that said, there’s surely no way they can come back from this. Is there?

Half-time! Lyon 4-0 Barcelona

A whirlwind first half comes to an end. And so, you’d imagine, does the game as a contest. Lyon have been as dominant as the scoreline suggests, only allowing Barca a sniff once they were four goals up. The main question now, surely, is just how many they’ll rack up.

Glorious chance for Barcelona! Their first corner of the game is a beauty, whipped in high and deep, and it’s Alexia who meets it at the back post with a free header. But she puts it over. That should have been a goal.

43 mins: Barcelona, all to belatedly, are now getting into this. After some encouraging one-touch stuff in midfeld, Duggan steals possession to launch an attack that breaks down with a dismayingly cheap offside. Van de Sanden replies with an upfield surge and a driven cross that evades everyone.

39 mins: A glimpse of a chance for Duggan, who strains to meet Ouahabi’s raking cross from deep. For a split second it looks as if she will do, but Renard makes up vital ground to slide in and thump clear.

36 mins: Lyon are not giving Barcelona an inch of breathing space, white shirts swarming towards any opponents in possession. Barca just can’t keep hold of the ball in any meaningful area of the pitch.

33 mins: Losada escapes down the Barca right and floats in a decent cross that causes momentary confusion between Renard and Bouhaddi. The defender takes charge and heads clear.

Goal! Lyon 4-0 (Hegerberg)

A hattrick for Hegerberg! And another tap-in! This time it’s Bronze who delivers, and it’s a superbly whipped cross that forces a decision from Panos. The keeper comes for it and flaps, leaving an open goal, and the Norwegian turns home first time under pressure.

28 mins: Majri dances infield and squares to Henry, who in turn sends it to Bronze. The right-back hits a great low cross, right through the corridor of uncertainty, but no one can make contact.

26 mins: Alexia’s low left-foot drive goes through the wall but doesn’t make it through a crowded penalty box. Tame.

25 mins: Duggan wins a free-kick, tussling with Renard on the edge of the box. She went down easily, and the defender gets a booking for her protests. Leon and Alexia stand over the ball…

22 mins: What do Barcelona do now? Three goals down in a Champions League final and firmly on the ropes. And no Didi Hamann to call on. But they’ve responded well here, passing with composure and working an opening down the right, where Losada’s cross sails right across the face of goal.

Goal! Lyon 3-0 Barcelona (Hegerberg)

Hegerberg on a hattrick already! And it’s a smart finish, hooking in with her left foot, but a preposterously easy goal. It was Majri who waltzed into the box unassailed, squaring from the left for the striker to blast home.

17 mins: Lyon’s Plan A is becoming increasingly clear. Again they look to unleash the pacy Van der Sanden down the right flank but this time the pass is just too strong and goes out for a goal kick.

Updated

15 mins: A deserved booking for Hegerberg, who goes necessarily steaming in on Pereira.

Goal! Lyon 2-0 Barcelona (Hegerberg)

A carbon copy of the first goal! Van der Sanden is again released down the right, speeds in behind the defence and squares low and hard. This time it’s Hegerberg waiting to tap in.

11 mins: Lyon really starting to assert their dominance. Le Sommer floats in a cross from the left that’s just too high for Hegerberg. A few inches lower and it’s a goal. After a bright start, Barcelona are struggling to get out of their half.

10 mins: Majri with some delightful skill on the left, spinning 180 degrees not once but twice and leaving her numerous markers with twisted blood.

8 mins: Lyon work their way down the left this time and Hegerberg, on the penalty spot, can’t quite twist her body to hit a clean shot. She lays off so an onrushing Majri, who drives at goal. Panos saves and Van de Sanden nods the rebound over. That could easily have been two-nil.

Goal! Lyon 1-0 Barcelona (Marozsan)

A quick and alarmingly simple move sees Mbock pick out Van de Sanden with a ranking downfield ball. The winger scampers down the right, plants a low cross into the box, and watches the Budapest-born Marozsan tap in an easy finish.

4 mins: Barca’s turn to attack. Putellas spread a nice ball to Duggan, out on the right, whose cross is charged down. Seconds later she’s played in again but drags her shot side. A decent chance.

2 mins: a few early touches for Bronze, stationed high up the right flank. After a one-two she nods the ball inside to Van de Sanden, who blasts the game’s first shot wildly over.

We're off

After high-fives all round between each set of teammates, Barcelona get the game under way. Almost immediately, Lyon nick the ball high up the pitch and pin their opponents back.

The teams are out, and crunching handshakes are exchanged. The mascots scuttle off. We’re almost ready to go.

But before any of that – pomp and ceremony! Tonight’s prematch entertainment comes courtesy of a team of blue and white clad dancers, who flail their limbs gallantly to the sound of boilerplate Euro-pop.

Updated

Bronze and Duggan aren’t the only Britons in action today. In the engine room for Lyon is Jess Fishlock, Wales most capped player of all time, on loan from Seattle Reign. She will play in a deep-lying role alongside Amandine Henry, with Dzsenifer Marozsán roaming forward just ahead of them.

And there’s still time to work your way through this meaty preview of the final, with soundbites from both sides of the divide:

Lyon’s Dzsenifer Marozsán, captain of Germany, was born in Budapest – so a victory here tonight would be doubly precious. “I can play the first time at home in front of my family,” she says. “It’s my dream, it was my dream, but now it’s true.”

So Toni Duggan starts for Barca, most likely on the left of a front three. Here’s our correspondent Suzanne Wrack with an in-depth piece on how the England forward has got on in the two years since her move from Manchester City:

The teams are in!

Lyon: Bouhaddi, Bronze, Renard, Henry, Majri, Le Sommer, Marozsan, Van de Sanden, Hegerberg, Fischlock, Mbock. Subs: Weiss, Bacha, Kumagai, Cascarino, Buchanan, Jaimes, Simon.

Barcelona: Panos, Maria Leon, Losada, T Marta, Mariona, Alexia, Aitana, Leila, Duggan, A Pereira, Martens. Subs: Gemma, Van der Gragt, Melanie, Andressa Alves, Patri, Oshoala, Andonova.

Preamble

There’s dominance, and there’s Dominance. And in the case of Olympique Lyonnais Féminin, we’re very much in the realm of the latter. Indeed, we have been for some time. Some basics facts: 13 straight domestic league titles, 10 domestic cup wins since 2003 and – get this – two league defeats in nine seasons. A Champions League victory in Budapest tonight would be their fourth in a row, and their sixth in nine years. Reynald Pedros’ team are reaching a level of supremacy not just unparalleled in women’s football, nor even in all football – but in all top-level sport, anywhere, any time.

Barcelona, then, have their work cut out. Their hunger for a trophy will be deep after finishing second in their domestic league for a fourth season on the trot. Surprisingly, this is their first appearance in the Champions League final. Given that their task tonight is to thwart the unthwartable, it’s in their favour that they have a hell of a defence.

English viewers can look forward to a subplot to two, Toni Duggan likely to lead the line for Barca, and Lucy Bronze and Izzy Christiansen among Lyon’s number (although the latter is a major doubt). The trio spent three years as teammates at Manchester City, while Bronze and Duggan will team up again at the World Cup this summer.

In reaching this season’s final, Lyon have clocked up an aggregate scoreline of 29-5, and their all-star squad contains the captains of France, Germany and Japan. Oh, and the inaugural Ballon d’Or winner up front – Ada Hegerberg is averaging a shade over a goal a game this season. Yet standing in their way today is Spain’s most miserly defence who have not conceded a goal in this competition since the round of 32, seven games ago. There’s no doubt Lyon are an unstoppable force. The question is, can Barcelona present them with an immovable object?
