Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas still hopes cancelled Ligue 1 season will finish

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas says he is hopeful the Ligue 1 season can still be completed despite its cancellation.

The French government has banned all sporting events in the country until at least September due to the coronavirus crisis, effectively forcing the football season to finish early.

Ligue 1 chiefs have already awarded the title to leaders PSG, while bottom two Amiens and Toulouse have been condemned to relegation.

The decision to end the campaign has also affected Lyon, who now face their first season without European football since 1997.

Discussing the season being cancelled, Aulas told L'Equipe : "We are on the wrong path, it may not be too late to try to imagine, in the light of what is happening everywhere in Europe, something that is politically coherent: we had until late August and maybe even early September to finish.

"Until I receive the transcript of the minutes from the board of directors which decided to stop ... I haven't had it since April 30, and it's strange."

Lyon were seventh in the table on 40 points when they received the ruling from Ligue 1's governing body LFP.

But they were just a point behind Nice and Reims, in fifth and sixth respectively, with 10 games still to play.

The club have now threatened to take legal action against LFP, having already called on them to reverse their decision in the interests of fairness and sporting integrity.

France's decision has come as a surprise when compared with neighbours Germany, whose government have given the green light for the Bundesliga to return this month.

Clubs in England and Spain are also gearing up for footballs return, and Aulas is optimistic France will follow suit.

"Things are becoming clearer," he added. "I noted almost 10 European countries where training has started again. So, we can really wonder. By adapting our methods, we could probably have finished the Championship.

"As long as there is life, there is hope. For all the people who are reasonable and who had the main argument, to tell us to stop, that all the other championships were going to stop, a very important milestone has been reached today."
