Lyon president confirms Nabil Fekir exit one year after Liverpool transfer collapse

Nabil Fekir will leave Lyon during the summer transfer market, the French club’s president has confirmed.

The 25-year-old looked set to join Liverpool last summer from the Ligue 1 side but a deal fell through, despite it being understood personal terms had been agreed and a medical had taken place.

The Reds were keen to secure a near £50million deal for the OL skipper prior to the World Cup 11 months ago, only to see a move collapse at the 11th hour in dramatic circumstances.

Liverpool  had even conducted in-house media interviews with  Fekir  ahead of announcing the transfer only to see Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas  walk away from negotiations  on June 9.

On top of that, pictures of the attacking midfielder in a Liverpool shirt were taken ahead of a move to Anfield and the collapse of the deal was one of the biggest talking points ahead of the Reds' 2018/19 campaign.

Now, with only 12 months remaining on his contract, the transfer saga regarding the France international will be reignited as Aulas has revealed the club intend to cash in this summer.

"Effectively, Nabil is outside [of the two departures expected], because we have an understanding that he can go,” he said after Lyon’s 3-2 victory over Nimes on Friday.

"Thanks Nabil for bringing what he brought, we have an understanding to let him go."

Fekir was in prolific form in 2016/17, scoring 23 goals in 39 matches to spark interest from Liverpool, but his effectiveness in the final third was reduced this term as he found the back of the net on 12 occasions.
