Lyon defender Marcelo makes Liverpool transfer admission

Lyon defender Marcelo says Liverpool were interested in signing him during the January transfer window.

The 33-year-old centre-back claims his agent spoke to the Reds about a possible move to Anfield, which ultimately did not materialise.

Liverpool moved to bolster their defensive options last month in the wake of an injury crisis.

With Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are all currently sidelined by long-term issues, the Reds made a double deadline day swoop.

They signed Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke, with the option of making the move permanent at the end of the season.

And Ben Davies also arrived from Championship club Preston North End.

Liverpool were linked with a host of other defenders and since the window closed, Marseille's Duje Caleta-Car has come out and said he had the chance to join the club.

Now Marcelo has followed suit, telling Canal Plus, via HITC : "I feel good here, I feel that I can give more to Lyon.

“Over time, I hope that we will find a good solution.

"Liverpool? My agent spoke with them, but I feel good here.

"My dream is to win the championship with Lyon."

L’Equipe previously reported that Marcelo turned down Liverpool as they only offered him a six-month contract.

The Brazilian has more than 500 career appearances during spells in France, Turkey, Germany, Holland, Poland and Brazil - with Lyon, Besiktas, Hannover, PSV Eindhoven, Wisla Krakow and Santos.

Ahead of Sunday's games, Lyon were top of the Ligue 1 table, just ahead of Lille and defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.
