Nathan Lyon reaches another Test landmark

Nathan Lyon is being hailed as the standard-bearer of Australian Test cricket after climbing yet another landmark.

The offspinner has become just the eighth bowler to take 450 Test wickets, reaching the milestone in Australia's 419-run belting of a hapless West Indies in Adelaide.

Only two Australians have taken more Test wickets than Lyon - Shane Warne (708) and Glenn McGrath (563).

"He is still learning and getting better," Australia's stand-in skipper Steve Smith said of the 35-year-old Lyon.

"And that is what you want from someone who has played 100 Tests.

"It sets the standard for everyone else.

"You can't just keep going on and doing the same thing over and over again, you have got to continue to get better and evolve and Nathan is certainly doing that."

Lyon, in his 112th Test, and his teammates took particular delight in Adelaide at his first innings dismissal of West Indian Joshua Da Silva, who was trapped lbw by a new addition to the spinner's repertoire.

"He's changing a few things up," Smith said.

"He got Da Silva lbw with side-spinning ball, which is one he has been really working on, that hit the seam and spun quite sharply.

"And (it) doesn't bounce quite as much which is probably why it (would have) hit the stumps."

Lyon's 450th wicket came on Sunday by bowling Alzarri Joseph, just two days after he eclipsed Warne as the most successful Test bowler in Adelaide.

Lyon, a former groundsman at Adelaide Oval, now has 59 Test wickets in the South Australian capital, where Warne claimed 56 victims.
