Lyon 0 Barcelona 0: Lionel Messi left frustrated as Champions League tie hangs in the balance

Barcelona were left frustrated after being held to a goalless draw by a resilient Lyon side in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 knockout round.

In an absorbing contest, both sides had numerous chances to win it but Barcelona were denied by the fantastic Anthony Lopes in goal for the hosts.

Ousmane Dembele had the chance to break the deadlock inside the first 30 seconds, but an erratic finish from the Frenchman wasted what could have been a huge goal for Barcelona.

No sooner had Barca settled into the game, Lyon had their moment just minutes later. Hossem Aouar picked up the ball on the edge of the box and struck a low, powerful effort towards the far corner but Marc-Andre ter Stegen got down well to tip it away.

But it was on nine minutes when ter Stegen showed why he is rated as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Moussa Dembele controlled a long ball into the path of Martin Terrier and the 21-year-old, after taking a touch, lashed a 25-yard rocket towards the top corner. At full stretch, ter Stegen somehow leaped across to make a stunning fingertip save and flick it onto the bar.

All eyes were on Lionel Messi but it took a while to get going and when the Argentinian magician finally got his first chance, latching onto Jordi Alba's cutback, he spurned his effort over the crossbar.

Barca continued to come forward and it was Ousmane Dembele again who broke in down the left, but this time goalkeeper Anthony Lopes came off his line confidently to make a decent block.

Both Dembele and Terrier went close towards the end of an absorbing first 45 minutes but failed to find the target, with the tie well poised for the second half.

It was just as intense and competitive after the break, with Depay going close with a curling effort sailing just wide of the far post.

Luis Suarez, who had gone 24 hours without an away goal in Europe, had two great chances to break his duck. First, he toepoked an effort towards goal which was diverted wide by Marcelo and then his curling effort, after being found in the box by Alba, went inches wide.

Ernesto Valverde sent on Philippe Coutinho and Arturo Vidal late on in search of a winner and Barcelona pegged back the hosts in the last few minutes.

First Sergio Busquets' long drive was tipped over by Lopes, then Messi's hopeful strike into the box was diverted over by Suarez.

It wasn't going to be their night, despite an impressive display of attacking football from both sides, but only a brave person would bet against Barcelona finding the net at the Camp Nou on March 13.
