Brisbane Heat will need a new captain for next summer's Big Bash League competition with star batsman Chris Lynn stepping down from the role.

Lynn informed Queensland Cricket of his decision upon his return from the postponed Indian Premier League last month, deciding it was time to hand over the reins after three summers at the helm.

"I have thought long and hard about my decision, and I think it is the right time for someone else to take over the reins and keep building with this talented group of players," Lynn said.

In 48 matches as Heat captain, Lynn led the team to 21 wins.

Despite missing five games last summer with a hamstring injury, Lynn was the Heat's leading scorer in 2020-21 with 458 runs as they made the finals for the first time in four seasons.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Jimmy Peirson would be the prime candidate to be named captained after leading the team in Lynn's injury-enforced absence last summer.

Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne, ex-Test opener Joe Burns or spinner Mitch Swepson are other potential captaincy candidates.
