Lynden Gooch 'really impressed' by Sunderland youngster Ellis Taylor

Sunderland winger Lynden Gooch has been "really impressed" by Ellis Taylor in training this week.

The midfielder signed a three-year deal with the Black Cats this summer and was on the scoresheet for Lee Johnson's side at Brewery Field.

The Wearsiders were leading at the break before a much changed under-23's side took to the field for the second half.

Taylor was among the substitutes and got Sunderland back into the game with a neat finish just after the hour mark.

When asked about the game and the youngsters who've trained with the first-team this week, Gooch said: "That's the important thing - getting the fitness in and making sure nobody gets injured. That's the main thing.

"It's been good. Ellis has been brilliant this week, I've been really impressed with him.

"He got his goal, a great goal as well, and it's important we get the younger players through."

The Black Cats lined up in a 3-4-3 against the Moors, in an attempt to get all first-team players 45 minutes.

Johnson's side looked comfortable for the majority of the first-half- despite the odd scare - and could, and probably should have had a greater lead at the break.

The starting xi only highlighted the need for new faces at the Stadium of Light.

Lynden Gooch and Jack Diamond operated at wing-backs, both of whom have played there before, but are much more attacking minded players.

When asked about playing at wing-back, Gooch said: "Obviously I played there quite a bit last season and the gaffer asked me to play there today to try and fit all the first-team players in.

"It was a good little run-out."
