Luxury student flats in Edinburgh offer self-service beer and wine on tap despite 'big party' fears

Beer on tap is being offered to lucky students in new luxury accommodation despite fears it will turn into a “big party”.

Vita Student applied for licensing approval from council chiefs to install the self-service tap in a communal space at its flats.

The accommodation in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, is styled as a “student hotel” by the owners.

Its communal room can hold 430 residents, who will be allowed to pour themselves up to four drinks at a time from a choice of two beers, red or white wine. They are bought with a preloaded card.

Students pay £289 a week to stay in a premium studio at the block.

Vita Student’s application went before the city’s Licensing Board.

Sergeant John Young, from Police Scotland’s Edinburgh licensing department, warned councillors there may be “insufficient staff being present in the licensed area”.

Councillor David Key said: “There’s also this lack of supervision. We could have 400 people here, all drinking four beers each – having a big party, essentially.”

The application was approved.

A Vita Student spokesman said the drinks service was “exclusively for the residents of our building”.

He added students will be supervised by Vita’s management team, and the pumps deactivate after 11pm.
