Luxury cruise ship Spirit of Adventure sails into River Tyne for first time

A luxury cruise ship has made its first visit to the Tyne.

SAGA Cruises' Spirit of Adventure arrived at the Port of Tyne on Wednesday morning, sailing through the piers and berthing at Northumbrian Quay, in North Shields.

The spectacular ship, which is new and on its inaugural cruise season, was designed to resemble a "high-end London hotel on the seas more than a cruise ship".

It has 554 cabins with private balconies, five restaurants, bars, a 444-seat theatre, a lido, gym, spa and a shop selling clothing, jewellery, perfume, confectionary and gifts.

A number of people watched from both sides of the river as the vessel entered the Tyne on Wednesday.

Among them was Jo Oliver, whose brother Chris Blackburn, from South Shields, is a chief engineer on the ship.

She said: "I'm really proud that he's coming back to his home town. This is the first time that we've seen him come in on a ship. We have taken some pictures of it for posterity."

Kate O’Hara, Port of Tyne’s commercial director for cruise, said she was "delighted to welcome SAGA and the Spirit of Adventure for her first visit to the Port".

"It’s fantastic to see passengers getting back out on the water and enjoying the amazing holiday experiences they offer," she added.

The ship is due to leave the Tyne at 5pm on Wednesday.
