Luxembourg added to travel quarantine list from midnight after coronavirus surge

Brits returning from Luxembourg will have to quarantine for 14 days following concern over coronavirus rates in the country.

The Government will renew restrictions on travel to the small European country from midnight on Friday - with the formal announcement coming just over three hours before the changes come into force.

The Foreign Office also updated its guidance to warn against all but essential travel to the country.

Luxembourg had previously been on the list of destinations where holidaymakers were not required to self isolate for two weeks on return.

But soaring rates of coronavirus in the country have alarmed ministers amid fears that Europe is on the cusp of a second wave of Covid-19.

Earlier, Matt Hancock warned travellers that other countries could be added to the quarantine list in the coming days - and expressed alarm at a "second wave [of the virus] starting to roll across Europe".

Data from the Joint Biosecurity Centre and Public Health England indicated "a significant change in both the level and pace" of coronavirus cases in Luxembourg, the Department for Transport said.

The move brings England in line with Scotland after Nicola Sturgeon announced quarantine measures would apply for Scots returning from Luxembourg earlier on Thursday.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: "Unfortunately the latest Luxembourg data shows an increase in Covid-19 cases meaning the country will be removed from the travel exemptions list.

"Anyone arriving to any part of the UK from midnight tonight will therefore need to quarantine."

The abrupt decision came only hours before the change was imposed, mirroring the last-minute move to axe quarantine-free travel to Spain at the weekend.

Tens of thousands of holidaymakers were left in limbo by the changes, which sparked anger from the tourism sector and the airlines at the height of the summer holiday season.

Mr Shapps fell foul of his own department's rules, arriving in Spain for a summer break on Saturday - only hours before the guidance changed.

Amid mounting pressure over the chaos, he abandoned his family holiday and returned to the UK on Wednesday where he is quarantining at home for 14 days.

Scotland's Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf said the decision was based on the latest available data from the Joint Biosecurity Centre, adding: "It gives another clear indication that the virus is active and still spreading.

"We have always maintained that we are closely monitoring the pandemic situation in all countries and we will impose quarantine requirements as necessary in a bid to protect the public.

"This virus is showing a resurgence in areas and it should not be forgotten how deadly it remains."
