Luuk Kluiters explains why Everton transfer didn't happen despite agreed deal

Luuk Kluiters has revealed why he didn't sign for Everton over the summer after confirming his move to Lille.

The young defender was on the Blues' list as they were looking to sign defensive options to strengthen their under-23s setup in the transfer window.

In July, the ECHO revealed that the 18-year-old was on trial at Finch Farm and the club were pursuing a potential deal for the AZ Alkmaar youngster.

This came after a pursuit of Wigan defender James Carragher hit a stalemate, with the two sides unable to agree a fee.

Now, however, Kluiters has revealed that there was a deal in place for Everton to sign him - but a work permit could not be secured to make the move official.

The defender wrote on Instagram: "A couple weeks ago, I made a deal with Everton.

"Unfortunately, I didn't get a work permit and the deal was off. Still I would like to give a huge thank you to Everton for the opportunity.

"Luckily, God opened a new door for me and today I am very delighted to have signed my first contract at this beautiful club @losclive.

"As ever, the hard work continues. Looking forward to the season ahead."

Kluiters will now join up with the Ligue 1 champions after completing his free transfer from AZ Alkmaar.
