Lurgan Celtic hoping to resurrect club in Mid-Ulster League

Lurgan Celtic are hoping a return to the Mid-Ulster League will help resurrect senior football at the club.

The former Irish Cup semi-finalists withdrew from the Northern Ireland Premier Intermediate League at the start of last season due to financial pressures, although it did keep its junior structure in place.

Back in the 2014-15 season the Lurgan club were at their zenith when they stormed to the Championship 2 title to earn promotion to Championship 1 – a season that then saw them defeat Portadown at Shamrock Park in the Irish Cup last eight before losing 3-0 to Linfield in the semi-final.

Assuming their return to the league where they began their football is rubber-stamped, Celtic could be joined in Division Three by current Carnbane League club Bessbrook United and Longsdale League outfit Riverdale.

Like Celtic, Bessbrook spent a spell in the Mid-Ulster League back in the early 90s, the Orior Park men are also the current holders of the Gerald Kennedy Cup, a trophy they won back at the end of August 2019 in a seven-goal thriller with Portadown club Ballyoran.
