Lurgan arrest made after man waves what appears to be a gun on residential street

A man has been arrested after an incident in which what appears to have been a gun was pointed towards a car on a residential street.

The drama unfolded at Beechgrove Avenue in the Aghagallon area of Lurgan, Co Armagh, on Tuesday afternoon.

Video circulated on WhatsApp on Tuesday shows what appears to be the same incident. In it, a man strides down the street with what appears to be a firearm in his right hand, pointing it at a silver car that looks like a police vehicle.

The car reverses away with the man following while still pointing with the item in his hand.

The car briefly stops and the man leans on it before the car moves forward and the man stands still against a car parked in the street.

He then swings his right hand, throwing away the suspected firearm. The man then throws his hands up in the air before being hauled to the ground by uniform police officers.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the police said they had “arrested a 52-year-old man on suspicion of a number of offences, including common assault, obstructing police, resisting police and possession of a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear, following an incident in the Beechgrove Avenue area of Lurgan on Tuesday afternoon (July 14th)”.

They added: “Enquiries are continuing and the arrested man remains in custody assisting officers with their enquiries.”
