Lupita Nyong'o and Chloe Grace Moretz to star in UFC drama

Lupita Nyong'o and Chloe Grace Moretz to star in UFC-based MMA drama 'Strawweight.'

In an exciting development for both film and sports enthusiasts, Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o and Chloe Grace Moretz are set to star in the upcoming UFC-based mixed martial arts drama, 'Strawweight.' The film, launched at the European Film Market by WME Independent and CAA Media Finance, follows the gripping journeys of two fighters who find themselves competing against each other in the intense Octagon.

With her captivating performances in 'Black Panther' and '12 Years a Slave,' Lupita Nyong'o has proven her talent as a formidable actress. Now, she takes on the role of a former champion in 'Strawweight' who is determined to reinvent herself and reclaim her title. On the other hand, Chloe Grace Moretz portrays a young woman whose life undergoes a profound transformation when she discovers her passion for the UFC. Both characters share a common goal - to earn respect - but only one can emerge victorious.

This highly anticipated film marks the feature directorial debut of James M. Johnston, who brings his extensive experience as a producer and second unit director to the project. Johnston has collaborated with renowned filmmaker David Lowery on several projects, including 'The Green Knight,' 'The Old Man and the Gun,' and 'Ain't Them Bodies Saints.' He is also part of the esteemed Sailor Bear collective alongside Lowery and Toby Halbrooks. Johnston's involvement in Disney's 'Peter Pan & Wendy' and Netflix's 'Last Letter From Your Lover' further showcases his talent behind the camera.

The script for 'Strawweight' was penned by Paul Harrill, based on a story by Johnston and Harrill. The production team includes Lars Knudsen of Square Peg, known for producing acclaimed films such as 'Hereditary,' 'The Northman,' and 'Dream Scenario.' Additionally, David Lowery, Toby Halbrooks, and Patrick Newall from Sailor Bear join the production as producers. Newall has previously worked on action-packed films like 'Extraction' and the highly anticipated 'The Gray Man.'

Adding an extra layer of authenticity to the film, UFC superstar and former Strawweight Division champion Rose Namajunas will serve as a fight consultant and executive producer. Namajunas' experience in the octagon will undoubtedly lend a realistic touch to the intense fight sequences portrayed in the film.

The worldwide sales of 'Strawweight' will be co-represented by WME Independent and CAA Media Finance, solidifying the film's global reach. The notable talent involved, from the accomplished cast to the skilled production team, promises an enthralling cinematic experience for audiences worldwide.

Lupita Nyong'o is represented by CAA and Del Shaw, while Chloe Grace Moretz is represented by CAA and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern. Lars Knudsen, David Lowery, Toby Halbrooks, and Patrick Newall are represented by WME. Rose Namajunas is represented by SuckerPunch Entertainment. Paul Harrill is represented by CAA and Echo Lake.
