Chinese photographer Luo Yang will showcase "Girls", a 10-year retrospective of her bold and intimate photography, at two venues in Bangkok starting next week.
This is the first chance to witness the intimate portraits of Chinese women Yang has met in her private life. Through her images, she explores femininity and its place in contemporary China, captured raw, on film and at unstaged settings.
Hailed as a rising star in Chinese photography, Yang was recently listed in BBC's "100 Women" as one of the most influential women in the world for her work on the "Girls" project.
Her photographic work is more like a personal diary as it is a constant search for answers and questions about her feminine identity through her subjects. Underlying tensions and ambivalent emotions lend friction to her images that are bold and upfront, intimate and sensitive at the same time.
Captured only on film cameras, they explore themes of youth, feminine identity, and reflect a shifting mindset with regard to concepts of feminism and identity in modern China. Above all, her work is a testament to her subjects' individuality. Besides numerous exhibitions in China, Yang participated in major shows in Europe. She is reputed for presenting highly staged portraits and carefully constructed poses that alternate with a raw, blurred snapshot-aesthetic. Yang will launch a photo installation with an opening party at RDX Offsite on Sunday Dec 9 at 6.30pm.
The works will be displayed daily from 3pm to 10pm from Dec 10-22. RDX Offsite is on the 5th floor of OHK Building, Charoen Krung 31.
Then she will launch her gallery exhibition at Woof Pack, Sala Daeng 1, on Dec 12 where she will speak about her work and creative process at 4pm. The exhibition will open for public viewing daily from 10am to 6pm (except Mondays) until Dec 22.
