Lungs

Claire Watson (What Rhymes with Cars and Girls) directs this comedy two-hander, written by UK playwright Duncan McMillan, about love, parenting and the future of the planet.

Set in Ikea, a man (Bert LaBonte) suggests to his partner (Kate Aitkinson) that they should perhaps start a family. Her response is a gush of pent up anxieties: “It’s like you punched me in the face, then asked me a maths question”.

While the play is “essentially just talking”, according to McMillan, the script delves underneath the couple’s witty banter to some of life’s more poignant questions: if the planet stands a chance, shouldn’t humans stop making more humans? And while the two fret over one of life’s big decisions, another question becomes more important: whether there’s enough love to hold it all together.
