Nov. 16--Lundberg Family Farms, a company based in Northern California, is voluntarily recalling two brown rice flour products that may be contaminated with salmonella.
The family-owned company said on its website that it is recalling Eco-Farmed Brown Rice Flour and Organic Brown Rice Flour sold Nov. 4-12 in bulk bins and in 25-pounds bags by mail order and at retail stores in California, Hawaii, Nevada, Arizona and Massachusetts.
The 25-pound bags have the following lot numbers: 141027, 141028,141029 and 141030.
The company said no serious illnesses have been reported from consumption of the flour.
Most people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal pain 12 to 72 hours after infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Lundberg Family Farms said it discovered the problem after routine testing and immediately notified distributors and retail stores. The company said it also reached out to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is cooperating with the agency.
This is the second time in the last two months that the company has recalled a product.
In October, it recalled bags of Sea Salt Rice Chips because of an undeclared dairy allergen. The company said it took the action after a customer made a complaint.
Lundberg Family Farms said anyone who purchased the flour products should discard them and request a refund by contacting its customer service representatives at (530) 538-3555.
