Luna Cinema event set to take place on Liverpool waterfront this weekend has been cancelled

Luna Cinema has confirmed its Luna on the Waterfront event has been cancelled.

The event, which was planned as an official trial event as part of the Government’s Events Research Programme (ERP), was originally scheduled to take place over three days in April before being altered to take place this weekend, May 14-16.

The events research programme (ERP) will be used to provide key scientific data into how events for a range of audiences could be permitted to safely reopen as part of the Government's roadmap out of lockdown, which aims to see all restrictions lifted and normality restored by June 21.

Luna on the Waterfront would have followed Circus event The First Dance, which took place over two nights on Bramley Moore Dock on April 30 and May 1, and the first live gig in more than a year which was held at Sefton Park and headlined by Blossoms on May 2.

The cinema event was due to show hit films The Greatest Showman, Dirty Dancing and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Organisers today confirmed it has been cancelled.

George Wood, managing director of Luna Cinema, said: "Following discussions with the Events Research Programme project team, a decision has been made for Luna on the Waterfront to be cancelled.

"There are a number of key learnings to be made following the hugely successful pilot events which have taken place in the past two weeks, and the team are now busy working through and analysing these findings.

"We would like to thank everyone for showing their support for the Luna event and apologise for any inconvenience caused. We would like to reassure all ticket holders that they will receive a full refund."

Luna Cinema has issued its summer 2021 events, which will feature 175 screenings and more than 50 locations, including a September event at Liverpool’s Croxteth Park, with screenings of Grease, Top Gun and more.

The next set of restrictions due to be lifted will occur on May 17 as Step 3 of the Government's roadmap. At this stage, indoor hospitality will resume and most legal restrictions on meeting others outdoors will be lifted, although gatherings of over 30 people will remain illegal.
