Lump of coal for Ozil, but goodwill for Mustafi - Arsenal's Christmas naughty and nice list

It may be Christmas but it certainly isn't the most wonderful time of the year for Arsenal.

The Gunners sit 15th in the Premier League having scored just 12 goals and registered 14 points in their opening 14 games.

It has been nearly two months since they last won in the league, and now Big Sam has officially labelled them relegation contenders.

It might seem like all doom and gloom but to hopefully raise a few spirits ahead of the festive period, football.london has taken a look who will be on Arsenal 's naughty and nice list this year.

Nice list -

Bukayo Saka

This is a fairly obvious one but Bukayo Saka definitely makes the Arsenal nice list.

The versatile winger was named Arsenal fans' footballer of the year and with the consistently brilliant performances he has put in throughout 2020 it is no surprise.

Only Kevin De Bruyne and Trent Alexander-Arnold registered more assists in all competitions than the England international last season.

At times he has carried several more experience members of the Gunners' side despite having only recently turned 19 himself. Arsenal need to give him all the presents he wants to keep him happy. Without Saka they would be in real trouble this season.

Shkodran Mustafi

Shkodran Mustafi gets a lot of criticism for his performances on the pitch, but some of the charity work he did off it during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic deserves plenty of credit.

On his birthday in April the German announced that he would be donating 16,000 meals to vulnerable people across Islington.

In a tweet explaining the decision he wrote: "I have seen the work of the Islington Council and the Arsenal Foundation and I want to help. I am donating a delivery of over 16,000 meals and other emergency supplies to the people in Islington who need our support more than ever!"

Santa will surely look upon him favourably after this and plenty of festive goodwill, should hopefully come his way.

Kieran Tierney

Kieran Tierney didn't play at all for the first six months of this year, but he only needed half as much time as his teammates to make it on to the nice list.

The Scot has been consistently impressive as others around him have floundered, and, like Saka, been a shining light in a poor season.

More than this though, Tierney is able to remain intensely relatable to Arsenal fans throughout and has often been one of the first to come out and apologies after the Gunners' many defeats this season.

The thought of the 23-year-old pulling his presents of a TESCO shopping bag instead of a fancy stocking is enough to bring a smile to anyone's face in these dark times.

Naughty List -

Matteo Guendouzi

If he's not on Santa's naughty list then Matteo Guendouzi is certainly on Mikel Arteta 's.

The French under-21 international was exiled from the squad after a series of disciplinary misdemeanours that culminated in him grabbing Neal Maupay by the throat during the Gunners' defeat to Brighton in June.

He is still technically an Arsenal player although it seems a matter of when rather than if he leaves permanently next summer with plenty of players interested in him.

Guendouzi has already impressed on loan at Hertha Berlin scoring once and assisting another in eight appearances so far, but it seems as though there is no way back for him as long as Arteta is Arsenal manager.

Granit Xhaka

Yet another throat grabber within the Arsenal dressing room, but Granit Xhaka has received decidedly different treatment from Mikel Arteta following his incident.

The Swiss has been pretty poor - like most of his teammates - for much of this season, but his tribute to retiring WWE great the Undertaker just as the Gunners looked to be getting on top against Burnley was unacceptable.

Worse still is the fact that Xhaka still hasn't apologised for his actions unlike Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel who were both sent off in similarly critical circumstances this season.

He is being linked with a move away from the Emirates in January, and were he to leave it's unlikely that too many Arsenal fans would wish him much festive goodwill on his way out.

Mesut Ozil

This one will be controversial, but Mesut Ozil definitely makes it onto Arsenal's naughty list this season.

The German has ben exiled from the first team along with Sokratis, but unlike the Greek defender who has accepted the opportunity to play for Steve Bould 's under-23 side to maintain his fitness, Ozil has engaged in a social media war with the club that has done neither many favours.

The latest instalment came on Wednesday night were the 32-year-old bemoaned his lack of first team opportunities via Twitter Q and A.

Fenerbahce are reportedly interested in signing the midfielder in January, and if the Gunners were able to get him off the wage books for the final six months of his contract that would represent a huge result. It seems highly unlikely though. A lump of coal seems more likely for Ozil than any grand presents.
