Luke Yates adamant London Broncos will not settle for just survival

London Broncos loose-forward Luke Yates insists the team will not be satisfied simply with Super League survival after climbing off the bottom of the table with a 26-24 victory over Hull KR.

Last night’s result moved them up to 10th place, ahead of Leeds and Hull KR, and in a tightly-packed midtable, just four points of a play-off spot with 10 games remaining.

It was the Londoners’ third straight league win after victories over leaders St Helens and fourth-placed Catalans Dragons.

But Yates said: “We’re still near the bottom and we’re not going to be happy there. We’ve won three on the bounce, so why can’t we keep going with it?

“We don’t want to leave [survival] going into the last game. We need to keep winning and rolling on the momentum.”

The Broncos had looked in danger of a home defeat when they let a first-half lead slip and dropped to an 18-8 deficit in the second half, but 18 unanswered points secured a narrow win.

It was a result that head coach Danny Ward admitted “really could have gone either way”, while Yates said the team’s fitness would hold the key to where they end up at the end of the season.

“We’re a fit team and have strived to be the fittest in the league, so that way we can turn things around in a short timeframe,” he said.

The Broncos next face an away game against Castleford Tigers a week on Sunday.
